Pengekalan Gaya Bahasa Melayu dalam Terjemahan Istiᶜarah Retention of Malay Language Style in the Translation of Istiᶜarah

Abstract

The style of istiᶜarah is often translated by most scholars as a metaphor in Malay rhetoric. However, the view of al-Jurjaniy in the book of Asrar al-Balaghah fi ᶜIlm al- Bayan which describes istiᶜarah with the elements of personification creates several questions. Thus, this qualitative study is conducted to examine the elements of the language style maintained in the translation of istiᶜarah into the Malay language. Besides that, the purpose of this study is to classify the types of istiᶜarah and to determine the method of translation based on Newmark’s approaches. The data collected were analyzed using the textual analysis method on the source text Bint al-Sultan and the translation text Cinta di Lembah Nil. Data was selected using purposive sampling and analyzed descriptively. The result of the study found that the translation of istiᶜarah tasrihiyyah has metaphorical element and the translation of istiᶜarah makniyyah has personification and depersonification element. The whole translation of istiᶜarah tasrihiyyah and istiᶜarah makniyyah is literally translated and it is a semantic translation according to Newmark.
